GPS Tracker IP Ratings

When it comes to buying electronic devices or outdoor equipment, you might have seen some products that come with IP ratings. But what does this actually mean? In the case of our Hardwired vehicle GPS tracker, it comes with an IP54 rating. In short, an IP rating is a code that indicates the level of protection an electronic device or equipment has against dust and water.

The first digit in an IP rating refers to the level of protection against solid objects, such as dust. The digit ranges from 0 to 6, with 0 meaning no protection and 6 meaning complete protection against dust. In the case of IP54, the first digit "5" means that the product is protected against dust, but not completely. This means that some dust might still enter the tracker, but it won't be enough to interfere with its operation.

The second digit in an IP rating refers to the level of protection against water. The digit ranges from 0 to 9, with 0 meaning no protection and 9 meaning complete protection against water. In the case of IP54, the second digit "4" means that the product is protected against splashing water from any direction. This means that if you accidentally spill water on the product or if it gets wet in the rain, it should still function properly. However, it's not suitable for complete submersion in water.
